I love words. I believe they hold meaning and are oh so powerful. I believe speaking words over our life and our seasons is impactful. And so I have begun the practice of naming and claiming each season as a family.
Though fall started a few days ago, I have been thinking and praying over our word for this fall. And tonight, as I drove to MOPS, I got it. This fall would be purposeful. I want each moment, each word, each interaction to be purposeful. Of course there is grace, because we certainly won’t be purposeful in all that we do. But we can try. And if there is anything to be learned from claiming and naming a season, it is grace. It is that through naming our season, we are choosing to live intentionally and with loads of grace.
Purposeful. Fall is a season of busyness. When fall begins, we are still trying to find our way through our new schedules. We are celebrating birthdays (most of us are fall birthdays). Fall ushers in yard work galore. Fall is the final hurrah for spending time outdoors, so we spend as much time as possible outside. Fall is the beginning of the holidays and with it we celebrate Halloween and Thanksgiving. Fall is the time when activities start for the kids…and for me. Fall is a beginning.
If fall is a beginning, a time of ushering in something new, something more, then I want it to be a time where we purposefully usher in the new. I want our new schedule to be purposefully chosen. I want us to clean the yard with purpose. Teaching our children the value and blessing of our home. I hope my children learn to approach school, activities, and friendships purposefully. I want our holidays spent and celebrated purposefully.
But even more, I want our daily interactions to be purposeful. I want the words I choose, when I encourage Man-Child to be a good friend, to be purposeful. I want the words I choose during homework time to be purposeful. I want the stories I tell to be purposeful. I want the words I say to my husband be purposeful. I want the words shared with friends to have purpose.
But most of all, I want my children to know the purpose behind it all. I want them to know each other better. I want them to understand our family better. I want them to know themselves better. And I want them to know God better.
Really, I hope to always live purposefully. But I know this season can get away from us. We can so easily get wrapped up in the busy and the crazy that we can forget. So this is our Purposeful Fall.
Will you name and claim this season with me? What will you name it? I would love to hear so we can encourage one another on! You can follow along with me on Instagram, using the #GMDpurposefulFall

I love the idea of having a word for each season. I really need to be more – purposeful – about praying for words for the seasons. I think I am going to spend my next few days praying for this! Thank you for your encouragement, and I hope that you all are blessed in this season!

Love how you have a word for the season. It helps slow things down and really focus. I really want to just focus- focus on God first and foremost and cast off all that hinders and gets in the way

Oh I love that: focus. Especially as we begin all the holidays, focus is such a perfect word!

Fall is my favorite. It is a slowing of creation…a place that is getting ready to go into winter…or a time period of rest. It is a most glorious and beautiful season. Although Fall in the South is much different from Falls in the Midwest. I think purposeful is a perfect word for the season. 🙂

awesome idea! I never thought to have a word for each season, but that’s a great idea! I would say word for fall is either gratitude or positivity . I really want to keep a good mindset ♥

I love this idea! Fall really is a busy time, full of endings and beginnings and how important to make it purposeful rather than just hectic. Thank you!
For my word (just to pick a different one form you, although I think it’s awesome!!), I’ll go with loving. I want to be more loving towards my family and friends, more service oriented and charitable towards all. More loving and forgiving to myself.

So good. I love that you choose words to guide your season and I totally agree that our words have power. If we aren’t paying attention, we might speak words over ourselves like “tired”, “busy”, or “scattered”, it is so much better to BE PURPOSEFUL and speak words of life. I am stealing this for me and mine. Love it!

EXACTLY! I so easily remember the negative words and so readily call myself those things. But truth tells me that I am more than those things. 💛

Oh I so agree, Jill. We should live purposefully all year round. Really most of the things I would “name” a season are characteristics of what all my life should be. Instead this naming of seasons is simply highlighting and focusing on this one aspect. And in so doing, becoming more intentional about our daily living.
